Is My Car Broken?

Most cars don't fail without warning. They tell you first - a noise, a smell, a pull in the steering, a light on the dash - and the gap between the first symptom and the actual failure is where a cheap repair turns into an expensive one.

Here are the eight signs worth acting on, what each usually means, and which ones mean stop driving and call us at 651-454-8174.

1. It stalls, hesitates, or won't accelerate

You press the pedal and the car thinks about it. That's usually fuel delivery or ignition - a failing fuel pump, a clogged filter, worn plugs, a bad coil pack.

Why it matters: a car that hesitates pulling into traffic is a safety problem before it's a mechanical one. Don't wait for it to strand you.

2. The steering feels heavy, loose, or vague

Hard turns, a wheel that doesn't self-center, or play before the car responds. Low power steering fluid is the easy answer; worn tie rods, a failing pump, or a bad rack are the ones that matter.

Stop driving if the wheel suddenly gets much harder or you hear a groan when you turn. Loss of steering assist at speed is not something to test.

3. You're leaving puddles

Clear water under the passenger side in summer is A/C condensation and it's normal. Everything else is worth a look:

Stop driving if it's brake fluid. That's a hydraulic system losing pressure.

4. The brakes squeal, grind, or feel soft

Squealing usually means the wear indicator is doing its job - pads are low but you have time. Grinding means the pads are gone and you're cutting into the rotor, which turns a pad job into a pad and rotor job.

A pedal that sinks toward the floor, or one that needs pumping, is a different problem entirely - that's air or a leak in the hydraulics.

Stop driving if the pedal is soft or goes to the floor.

5. A dashboard light is on

Not all lights are equal:

• Red - stop as soon as it's safe. Oil pressure, charging, brakes, temperature.
• Yellow / amber - get it looked at soon. Check engine, ABS, TPMS.
• Flashing check engine - pull over. A misfire that's flashing is actively damaging the catalytic converter, and that's a four-figure part.

A steady check engine light with no other symptom still means the computer logged a fault. We can pull the code and tell you what it found.

6. New noises

• Squeal on startup that fades - belt or tensioner
• Clicking on turns - CV joint
• Humming that changes with speed - wheel bearing or tire wear
• Knocking that rises with RPM - internal engine, and this one is urgent
• Clunk over bumps - sway bar links, struts, or worn bushings

7. It pulls, shakes, or wanders

A pull to one side is alignment or uneven tire pressure. A shake in the steering wheel at highway speed is usually tire balance. A shake through the whole car under braking is warped rotors.

Left alone, an alignment problem will eat a set of tires in a few thousand miles

• which makes it one of the cheapest repairs to do early and one of the most expensive to ignore.

8. It smells wrong

• Sweet, syrupy - coolant leak
• Burning oil - oil on a hot exhaust component
• Rotten eggs - catalytic converter
• Burning carpet or hot metal - brakes dragging, often a stuck caliper
• Gas inside the cabin - stop, get out, and call. Do not keep driving.
